Bangkok is steeped in spirituality and travellers booking flights to Bangkok are sure to get great surprises by way of highly revered temples for utter devotion, stupefying architecture and overwhelming adornment.

Bangkok is the city of sheer intoxicating dynamism. The contrast of this city is startling – soaring skyscrapers dazzle with bright lights and wild nightlife, while every corner is alive with devout temples or Wats. There is no better place than pious Buddhist temples of Bangkok to get a true insight into the culture, tradition and people of Thailand. Every single temple boasts awe-inspiring architectural designs, glittering decorations, radiant pottery, adorned with intricate idols of Lord Buddha gilded in shimmering gold and depicting devout spirituality of the people of the country.

It is not startling to know that cheap airfares on flights to Bangkok are highly popular as millions await their chance to get acquainted with the mesmerizing temples of the region. Visit to this marvellous soil of holiness would not be complete without seeing these five temples at heart of Thailand.

Wat Arun

On the banks of Chao Phraya River, across Wat Pho, is this rocket-shaped temple Wat Arun. Popular as Wat Chaeng amongst locals, travellers revere it as the Temple of Dawn which typifies breathtaking architecture, fine craftsmanship, kaleidoscopic patterns, and multi hued ceramic tiles. 70 meters lofty spire decked out with tiny pieces of coloured glass and intricately placed Chinese porcelain has always attracted travellers who flock this temple in droves. Best time to visit the temple is between October and May when the temple hosts a nightly light and sound show. This is also a good time to grab tickets on cheap flights to Bangkok.

Wat Pho

Wat Pho shines just behind the spectacular Emerald Buddha. This remarkable ancient temple is a part of the itinerary of most tourists taking flights to Bangkok. It is the largest temple in Bangkok and features a 46 metres long impeccable reclining Buddha statue covered in gold leaf. The sprawling stupa-studded ground of reclining Buddha and the massive collection of Buddha images are simply breathtaking. One can wander amid the peaceful rock gardens, serene chapels and magnificent stupas here.

Wat Phra Kaew

Wat Phra Kaew, also known as Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram is the integral Buddhist temple in Thailand. The immaculate Wat Phra Kaew sits on the grounds of Grand Palace and enshrines the highly revered Buddha statue known as Emerald Buddha or Phra Kaew Morakot. The fascinating emerald statue shows Buddha in the meditating position and is meticulously carved from a single jade. The temple is incredibly awe-inspiring and has a great sense of peace in its environs. One of the highly revered temples in Thailand, Wat Phra Kaew is also one of the biggest attention grabbers tempting cultural enthusiasts to hunt for airlines offering cheap flights to Bangkok.

Wat Saket

Wat Saket is the temple of Golden Mount and holds a notable place in Bangkok. The temple houses Buddha relics within its 58-metre-high ‘chedi’ surmounted by a golden cupola. Wat Saket is famous for golden mount or Phu Khao Thong, a grubby yellow hill crowned with gleaming gold chedi. A flight of 318 steps with breathtaking panoramic views of Bangkok takes one to the top of golden mount rising from within the compounds of Wat Saket. It hosts the annual temple fair, Loy Kratong festival in the first week of November and those keen on experiencing the extraordinary splendour of the illuminated mount and a massive fun fair must book well in advance to net cheap flights.

Wat Sutat

Wat Sutat is one of the oldest temples in Bangkok renowned for its beautiful roofline, huge golden Buddha, magnificent frescoes and giant swing out front. The temple was the site of original giant swing ceremony of giving thanks for a rich rice harvest. The temple’s sprawling hall, the lush gardens, the Buddha images, wall paintings and cloisters, all vie for attention.

Not enough time to go through the standard US passport renewal process? If you have tickets to leave the country in the next 14 days and just found out that your passport is expired, you have a couple of different options.

?/p>

The first is to make an appointment at the nearest Regional Passport Agency office. These are special passport offices that are capable of issuing passports within 24 hours to US citizens with emergency travel needs. There are currently 21 of these offices scattered throughout the US, so depending on where you live, getting to the closest one may require some traveling in and of itself. If you decide to go this route, here’s what you need to do:

?/p>

Call 1-877-487-2778 to make an appointment.

Do not attempt to renew by mail, even if you are eligible to do so! Instead, bring your US passport renewal application, your current passport, legal documentation to support any name change and 2 passport photos with you to the appointment.

Research to ensure that you are bringing all of the documents you need. See Passport Renewal: A Step by Step Guide for details.

Don’t be late to your appointment. The tide waits for no man-and neither do Regional Passport Agency offices! You won’t be allowed in if you arrive more than 15 minutes after the appointment time.

?/p>

The second option is to hire a private passport expediting company to handle the appointment for you. This is an especially good option for those who don’t live near a Regional Passport Agency office or who work during the day when passport agency offices are open and can’t get time off work to go. An expeditor will deliver your application to the Department of State for fast processing without the hassle of making an appointment and waiting in line.

?/p>

If you choose this option, research the company first to make sure they are reputable. Then, follow the instructions they give you very carefully to ensure that you get your passport in the time period promised.

I had never read about Aberdeen’s connection to the first Everest Reconnaissance Expedition of 1921 until I read about Alexander Mitchell Kellas. Kellas was born in Aberdeen in 1868 and he can best be described as a chemist, explorer and a mountaineer.

During the early part of the twentieth century Kellas made nine trips to the Himalayas making two important first ascents of Pauhunri (7126m) and Chomiomo (6830m). As well as being a mountaineer Kellas was a chemist. He was awarded a Dphil from Heidelburg (Germany) and following this he took a lectureship in chemistry at Middlesex Hospital Medical School, London.

The combination of chemistry and mountaineering gave Kellas a unique insight into high altitude physiology and by the time of the 1921 Everest Reconnaissance Expedition, Kellas was an expert in this field of study. He pioneered modern thinking about altitude and the variables that would need to be addressed including barometric pressure, alveolar P02, arterial oxygen saturation, maximal oxygen consumption and maximal ascent rate near the summit. Having considered these issues Kellas believed that Mount Everest could be ascended by men of extreme mental and physical constitution without the use of supplementary oxygen. This hypothesis was not verified until Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler made the first ascent of Mount Everest without artificial oxygen in 1978.

Kellas was also extremely knowledgeable about routes on Mount Everest and he was the first to note the natural ability of the Sherpa to operate at altitudes above 5000 metres. He was also one of the first to train teams of Sherpa to work at altitudes above 7000 metres.

Kellas was not the stereotypical early twentieth century mountaineer and George Mallory described him in the following way, ‘ Kellas I love already. His appearance would form an admirable model to the stage for a farcical representation of an alchemist. He is very slight in build, short, thin, stooping, and narrow chested; his head is made grotesque by veritable gig-lamps of spectacles and a long pointed moustache. He is absolutely devoted and disinterested person.
’
Before setting out for the 1921 Everest Reconnaissance Expedition Kellas had been on an arduous expedition to Karbru in eastern Nepal. He had nine days rest before joining the Everest expedition. Kellas died of a heart attack at Khampa Dzong, just as Mount Everest would have come into view for the first time during the expedition. He was buried within sight of Everest.

Kellas made a huge contribution to the science of high altitude mountaineering but his expertise and knowledge has not been fully recognised until recently. A biography entitled Alexander Kellas: Prelude to Everest by Ian R. Mitchell and George Rodway is to be released in August 2011.

Travelling with kids can be a very stressful experience, especially when you don’t know how to keep them occupied. Airports are places that most parents dread; the waits can be interminable and children seem to become antsy right away. If you’re going to be flying into or out of London’s Heathrow Airport, though, you’re in luck: There are several topnotch, kid-friendly shops, attractions, restaurants and activities available. Educate yourself about the best places and attractions for children at Heathrow prior to travelling, and you’re bound to have a much smoother experience.

Play Areas at Heathrow

Every terminal at Heathrow has at least one play area, where small children can run around and burn off a bit of energy. These unsupervised play areas are geared toward kids ages two to six, and can be easily found by consulting one of the several maps in any given terminal.

If you’ll be flying out of Terminal 4 at Heathrow, you’ll be happy to know that the most elaborate children’s area at the airport is located here. The KLM Holideck Lounge is a state-of-the-art facility where children will forget all about being bored. Admission is approximately £18 per person, but most parents will happily fork over the cash in order to keep the kids happily occupied. The KLM Holideck Lounge boasts an arcade, toys, games, refreshments and many other amenities that are especially designed with kids in mind.

Keeping the Kids Busy

Savvy travellers always bring along something to keep the kids occupied – but kids often grow bored with the items they bring with them. In that case, you can visit a BAA information booth for complimentary colouring books and crayons. Depending on the ages of your children, this should tide them over for a bit. Every terminal at Heathrow is dotted with shops, also, where books, candy and other small amusements can be purchased. Even if your flight is delayed, keeping the kids happy should be a breeze.

Be Prepared For Delays

Delays happen, and being prepared for them is essential. Always keep open the possibility of booking last minute hotels near the airport in the case of long delays; all of the kid-friendly lounges and restaurants in the world eventually lose their luster. Last minute rooms are easy to come by; even if you don’t actually sleep in them, they can save the day when a flight is drastically delayed or cancelled.

Do you fancy yourself an adventurer? Do you dream about going off and touring a remote location, climbing a challenging mountain or trying something new? Do you think its fun to push against your own envelope and expand your horizons? If so, why are you settling for a ho-hum vacation? What makes you settle for going somewhere else to sit around and be bored? Why not try something active? No matter what activities interest you or what limits you want to test, there are adventure travels awaiting a booking by you. Below are some choices for people who get bored of always taking the same type of vacation.

It may be hard to believe, some cruises are classified as adventure travels. Some available cruises have target destinations, such as Europe or the Greek Isles, which can be excellent ways to journey out and acquire information about the great moments in history and touring historical locations. Don’t your want to tour the location of the first Olympic games? Don’t you want to see Stonehenge? You can even be mobile on the boat. These cruises usually come with opportunities to do things like rock climbing and sea diving. There is plenty to do, besides lying on the lido deck!

Do you love to go hunting but are tired of the game that surrounds your home area? Why not get out on a hunting travel excursion?

Almost every continent features tours and companies that will teach you how to hunt the game that is found in that local area. Do you want to hunt big (non endangered) game in Africa? You can bring your dreams to life. Are you into hunting out in the wild west of America? You can also do that. The biggest choice you have on a hunting expedition is choosing what you want to hunt. Next it is as simple as figuring out logistics like: “how can I get my hunting equipment out there or will the outfit me with the necessities?”

Do you dream of seeing large animals in-person? Have you always wanted to see exotic animals in their natural habitats? Why not take an African Safari. There are tours that go all over the continent of Africa. Select one of the many trusted outfits and let them show you where to see hippos, elephants and giraffes in their native habitats. See families of lions and hyenas. View birds that you’ve only see in the zoo. If you love animals, a Safari is one of the best ways to experience adventure travels. There are countless ways an “adventure travel” can be defined. For some it involves death-defying activities such as scaling the world’s tallest mountains or putting oneself into an extreme climate condition. For others it involves challenges they do not face in everyday life like driving cattle, hiking different terrain, etc. Still for others, adventure travels include some learning time for new things and still having a stress-free trip. To sum up: it doesn’t matter what you’re interested in, you can find an adventure vacation perfect for you!

It is often the case that the little things make traveling less enjoyable than it should be. It is typically a result of a many of small things together that take the fun out of traveling. For instance, waiting for a long time to get a ticket or losing a bag can make the whole journey unbearable. Then, to add to that, if you have to get double-checked at security or are not able to find the vehicle rental that want that can also prove an inconvenience.

These things don’t ruin the trip on their own, but they make it much more stressful than it should be. On their own, they are not vacation or trip killers like certain other things could be; things like reservations being lost or sitting on the tarmac for six hours waiting to take off. These types of things are avoidable and make such a mess of your plans and are so uncomfortable that they can ruin the trip entirely.

There should be some things that run smoother when you go to the airport. Sometimes it seems like they make the processes and the way things have to be done much harder and much more complex than they should be. It’s not like the airport is a giant gift shop that they have to keep you in there as long as possible so that you buy all the useless gizmos and trinkets that you have room for in your luggage.

There really is no reason to keep you there, trapped for any longer than absolutely necessary. I know that running an airline and flying planes can be complicated and things must be done in order to be safe, but things that should be easy like getting on the plane and getting through lines seem to be artificially inflated so that they take longer to do.

You may want to think about whether or not they recognize they have to keep busy for a while and that if they accomplish that with dull, dreary and prolonged tasks then you will fail to notice the time it takes to board that flight. No doubt this sounds like some sort of conspiracy but when you feel like a mouse trapped in a labyrinth and cannot get to your meal ticket then you begin to speculate about things. It may be that is not a real conspiracy but if someone took a little time to work out a solution for all the minute problems then the bigger issues could be more endurable.

Are you unsure of the correct etiquette when travelling on an aeroplane? Here is a list of sensible behaviors that should be followed to avoid any grievances.
Boarding and exiting an aircraft
When boarding a plane, always carry your baggage so you don’t knock other passengers. When walking along the aisle to find your seat carry your bag directly in front or behind you as the aisle is narrow. On every flight I have travelled I have witnessed seated passengers being hit in the head by other passengers’ bags.
When it’s time to exit the plane don’t run to the door. Let passengers in front of you disembark in an orderly fashion row by row. Rushing off the aircraft has no purpose as your luggage will not be waiting for you on the carousel in the arrival hall.
Hand Baggage
Today travellers take more hand luggage onto the aircraft to avoid checked luggage fees, minimize the risk of lost luggage and make it simpler for a fast exit of the airport after arrival. Please make sure you only have one carry-on bag and it complies with the required dimensions for carry-on baggage. When you have found your seat it is recommended to place your bag in the overhead locker directly above you[spin] or under the seat in front of you. [spin]It is important to keep you bag close at all times as there have been incidents of theft from overhead lockers when thieves see people store bags in overhead lockers behind their seat out of view.
Seating Etiquette
While seated on the aircraft try to show consideration of the person next to you. If you are a big person you should not book a window seat as it will be too small for you. Ensure you reserve an aisle seat at the front of the section. That way you won’t be a nuisance to the passenger next to you.
If you have an aisle or window seat think about the disadvantaged passenger in the middle seat and allow them to claim some much needed armrest space.
On short flights, reclining your seat should be kept to a minimum. On longer flights it is acceptable to recline your seat to sleep but try to do it slowly. Never put your seat back during meal time. I have witnessed many spilt cups of coffee and upset passengers who have had to endue the rest of a long flight with soiled clothing.
Please shower before boarding a flight. If you have any history of foot odour do not remove your footwear. Remember that you are in close proximity to other passengers and those passengers cannot escape your bad odours. On one flight it was funny to see flight attendants spraying one dirty passenger who smelt very bad.
Going to the Bathroom
If you are a frequent bathroom restroom immediately before boarding and to book an aisle seat to be of minimal nuisance to other passengers. Climbing over the seats, especially at meal time, is very inconvenient. Also don’t use the headrest of the seat in front as extra leverage when you get up as this is very annoying to the passenger in that seat. Secure your tray table gently.
Having travelled extensively all over the world I am always annoyed at how many people don’t have any consideration for the people around them. Travelling would be a much more pleasant experience if people were more aware of other passengers.
